About Us
Southern Curiosities is a small, woman owned business that creates Nature Art and Whimsical Taxidermy located in Irmo, South Carolina. Specializing in entomology art and whimsical taxidermy — Southern Curiosities preserves the beauty of nature in shadow boxes, terrariums, and upcycled vintage displays. Every specimen and all botanicals used are sustainably sourced, honoring their lives even after they have passed from this world. Inspiration comes from the timeless elegance of Victorian taxidermy, the imagination of Walter Potter and the incorporation of the beauty of Mother Nature.
The Artist
Hi, I’m Jessica – the creator behind Southern Curiosities! My journey began in the quiet forests of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and continued through the vibrant and diverse landscapes of the South. Surrounded by nature from an early age, I developed a deep appreciation for the outdoors and the beauty of all living things—a love that continues to inspire everything I create.
At heart, I’ve always been an artist. As a child, I explored every creative outlet I could find—painting, sewing, puppet-making, and more. In 2019, my curiosity led me to the world of entomology, and I began teaching myself the delicate art of insect pinning. What started as a hobby quickly grew into a passion, and by 2020, I took the leap and launched my own nature-inspired art business.
In the spring of 2023, Southern Curiosities became my full-time focus—an opportunity to blend my love of nature with my artistic spirit. Every piece I create is a celebration of that harmony: a whimsical fusion of natural beauty, imagination, and storytelling. Drawing inspiration from the enchantment of magical forests and the charm of animated classics, I aim to breathe life and personality into each of my creations.
Through Southern Curiosities, I hope to share a sense of wonder, curiosity, and connection to the natural world—one tiny creature at a time.
